Monzo launches Aura metal credit card with AI subscription and cashback for £15 monthly fee

Monzo has launched a premium metal credit card that includes access to artificial intelligence subscriptions and cashback rewards, joining a growing trend of financial institutions bundling technology perks with traditional banking products.

The Aura card, priced at £15 per month, represents the digital bank's latest push into premium offerings as it serves more than 15.2 million customers with deposits exceeding £25 billion as of May 2026. The product arrives as Monzo reported pre-tax profits of £87.3 million in the year ending March 2026, a 44% increase year-on-year, whilst revenues climbed 39% to £1.7 billion.

Metal cards and market positioning

The new card combines a metal finish with an AI subscription benefit and cashback functionality. Metal cards have become increasingly popular in European banking, with penetration in premium credit lines reaching nearly 12% across the continent and over 34 European issuers now offering metal cards within their premium tiers.

Monzo's pricing positions the Aura card competitively within the market. Rival fintech N26 charged £14.90 per month when it launched its premium metal card in the UK market in December 2018, bundling travel insurance and lounge access with the physical card. The production economics of such products are substantial, with Monzo's chief product officer previously stating that the bank's premium metal cards cost approximately £50 each to manufacture.

AI subscriptions as a banking perk

The inclusion of AI subscription access reflects an emerging pattern in the credit card industry. American Express introduced a $300 annual ChatGPT Business statement credit for its Business Platinum and Business Gold cards in May 2026, signalling that major issuers view artificial intelligence tools as valuable customer perks.

Monzo's cashback feature builds upon infrastructure the bank has already deployed across its product range. The digital lender offers cashback rates between 2% and 10% from participating retailers, available across personal, joint, Plus, Premium, and Flex Credit Card accounts.

Premium subscription performance

The launch comes as Monzo has demonstrated strong performance in premium subscription products. The bank's paid subscription plans, including Perks, Extra, and Max, attracted almost 900,000 paying personal customers as of March 2025, with subscription income rising 50% to £101.3 million.

Monzo's product development strategy appears focused on its core markets following a strategic shift announced in April 2026. The bank revealed plans to withdraw from the United States market, with existing American customers able to continue using their accounts until June 2026, whilst the company concentrates resources on the UK home market and European expansion.

Is it worth the cost?

For consumers evaluating whether the £15 monthly fee represents value, the calculation depends on individual usage patterns. Those who would purchase an AI subscription independently and regularly earn cashback through the card may find the bundled offering economical. However, customers who would not otherwise pay for these services should carefully assess whether the combined benefits justify the annual cost of £180.

The Aura card arrives as Monzo positions itself for growth, with the bank targeting a valuation of £6-7 billion in its anticipated 2026 initial public offering. Premium products that generate recurring subscription revenue could prove attractive to potential investors evaluating the company's business model and revenue diversification.
