Disorder in the stands
A large contingent of supporters traveled from Istanbul for the match. The Scottish Sun reported confrontations between Besiktas fans and officers in the away section, where a substantial police presence largely brought the disorder under control.
Videos circulated widely on social media also appeared to show fighting among Besiktas supporters. One fan apparently targeted was wearing an Amedsport shirt. The newly promoted club is based in Diyarbakir and has a large Kurdish following.
The newspaper reported that ultra groups also appeared to react to a Celtic supporter taunting them with a rival flag. The supporter was escorted away. During the game, ultras in the Celtic section displayed the flags of Kurdistan and Vatican City.
The Scottish Sun's report said no arrests had been reported at that point. In its official assessment, Police Scotland said it had provided a "proportionate policing response" for the fixture and that the event "passed without serious incident".
Earlier unrest and travel arrangements
Police Scotland condemned an earlier attack on two officers in Glasgow. At about 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, the officers were patrolling a busy area and responding to a reported disturbance on Sauchiehall Street when they were attacked. Neither needed medical treatment.
The Scottish Sun separately reported that Besiktas hooligans had thrown bottles at police on the night before the match.
Ahead of the fixture, Besiktas urged supporters to make the journey to Celtic Park together with a police escort. STV News reported that fans were asked to gather at Merchant Square at 3 p.m. for a 5 p.m. departure. The away-section gates were scheduled to open at 6 p.m.
The club also warned supporters that flares and similar materials were prohibited both downtown and inside the stadium, and that anyone violating the ban faced immediate detention.
Celtic secure first league-phase win
The game was Besiktas's first meeting with a Scottish team, according to STV News. Celtic's comeback victory gave them their first win in this season's Europa League league phase, Sky Sports reported.
Junior Olaitan opened the scoring for Besiktas in the 54th minute, converting a penalty rebound. Substitute Callum Osmand equalized with his first touch before Camilo Durán put Celtic ahead in the 78th minute.
Orkun Kökçü brought Besiktas level in the 85th minute, but Durán scored his second goal in the 87th to settle the match.
Nationwide Bonfire Night operation
The match took place as officers across Scotland dealt with Bonfire Night and fireworks-related disorder. The Scottish Sun described the overall deployment as the country's largest policing operation since President Trump's visit.
Under Operation Amberlight, Police Scotland deployed up to 1,700 officers and sought assistance from forces in England and Wales, The Herald reported. Officers from Avon and Somerset, Hampshire, Hertfordshire and South Wales were expected to serve on Scotland's streets.
Police Scotland recorded 1,024 fireworks-related calls from October 31 through November 5, 2026, compared with 833 in 2025. Despite the increase in calls, the force said fewer incidents required a specialist public order response.
In Glasgow on November 5, police and Scottish Ambulance Service crews responding to a report of an injured male on Greenside Street came under attack with fireworks. A police vehicle caught fire and was seriously damaged. A police officer and an ambulance staff member sustained minor injuries, and officers arrested a 16-year-old male.
Police Scotland said Operation Amberlight concluded with seven arrests nationwide on the evening of Thursday, November 5. Investigations into offenses committed across the country would follow.
