Solana Price Analysis: $80-$95 Support Holds as Alpenglow Upgrade Nears
Solana is trading near $105 as the network prepares for a major consensus upgrade scheduled for October 21, 2026, at approximately 15:00 UTC during epoch 1064. The Alpenglow upgrade aims to reduce transaction finality from roughly 13 seconds to 150 milliseconds through a fundamental change to the network's consensus mechanism.
The upgrade replaces Solana's existing TowerBFT consensus protocol with a new system called Votor, which moves validator votes off-chain. This architectural change represents approximately 18 months of development work by Anza, Solana's core development team, though the actual migration will occur within a single slot during activation.
Transaction finality—the point at which a blockchain transaction becomes irreversible and permanently recorded—varies significantly across networks. While Ethereum currently achieves finality in approximately 12-13 minutes through its Casper FFG consensus mechanism, Solana's target of 150 milliseconds would represent a substantial reduction even from its current 13-second finality period.
Network Performance and Stablecoin Activity
Grayscale reports that Solana averaged more than 1,400 transactions per second year-to-date, significantly exceeding BNB Chain's fewer than 200 TPS and the approximately 40 TPS processed across other blockchain networks. Transaction fees have averaged approximately $0.005 this year.
The network has demonstrated growing activity in stablecoin payments, processing approximately 25% of all stablecoin transactions over the past three months. This exceeded every other blockchain during the period. Solana's stablecoin supply reached a record high of approximately $17.3 billion on September 25, 2026, making it the third-largest stablecoin network by supply behind Ethereum and Tron.
Faster finality and low fees may support payment applications requiring rapid settlement and help developers build applications where transaction costs and confirmation times influence user experience.
Network Reliability Context
Solana has experienced seven major network outages since its mainnet launch in 2020, with the last full network halt occurring on February 6, 2024, lasting approximately five hours. However, as of mid-October 2026, the network has maintained over two years of continuous uptime without a full outage, marking its longest stability streak since mainnet launch.
The Alpenglow upgrade introduces economic changes for validators, who must pay a new 0.8 SOL per-epoch admission fee that will be burned. This replaces the previous system where validators spent approximately 1 SOL per epoch on vote transaction fees under TowerBFT.
Technical Price Structure
Crypto trader Don notes that SOL remains near $105 after facing rejection at a descending trendline. The token has stabilized above $100 without retesting the lower support zone.
According to Don, the $80-$95 region represents the key support area. A yellow ascending trendline extending from 2023 lows provides additional long-term context. These levels define areas traders may monitor during potential pullbacks.
Don's analysis identifies a conditional scenario where reclaiming the descending trendline could lead to targets at $166 and $378. Conversely, a move below the $80-$95 support zone would invalidate the bullish structure.
CoinGecko data shows SOL trading at $104.84, with $2.66 billion in 24-hour trading volume. The token has declined 1.29% over 24 hours and 4.41% over seven days. Solana ranks seventh by market capitalization among all cryptocurrencies, with a market cap of approximately $60-64 billion as of mid-October 2026.
Higher throughput and cheaper transactions may support adoption, but network performance metrics and token price represent distinct aspects of the ecosystem.
