RSPCA Issues Urgent Appeal for Teddy Bears to Comfort Abandoned Kittens
The RSPCA has issued an urgent appeal for teddy bears and cuddly toys to comfort orphaned kittens as the animal welfare charity faces what it describes as crisis-level pressure across its rehoming centres.
The charity says its facilities are under significant strain to find space for a growing number of cats and kittens, with the appeal coming amid a sharp rise in animal abandonment across England and Wales. The organisation received 20,999 abandonment reports in 2023, representing a 51% increase between 2021 and 2024.
Cuddly toys serve a vital welfare function for orphaned kittens, providing something warm to snuggle up to that replicates the comfort a mother would normally provide. When the kittens are eventually rehomed, they take their toy with them to their new family, helping ease the transition.
Surge in Multi-Cat Incidents
The RSPCA has experienced a 67% increase in multi-cat incidents over the past year, with officers dealing with 1,752 cases involving properties with ten or more cats in 2025. This averages almost five such incidents every single day.
The Birmingham centre alone currently has 113 cats in its care, with 51 at the centre itself and 62 in foster homes. Among these are 11 orphaned kittens being hand-reared by experienced foster carers who rely on the donated cuddly toys to provide comfort during this vulnerable period.
The timing of the appeal coincides with the tail end of the cat breeding season, which runs from May to September each year. During this period, the majority of kittens are born, causing a significant influx of cats and kittens into rescue centres that places considerable strain on rehoming facilities.
Economic Pressures Drive Abandonment
The cost of living crisis has been a major driver of the increased pet abandonment rates, with many owners unable to afford veterinary care, food, and other pet-related expenses. This economic pressure is reflected across the animal welfare sector, with Cats Protection reporting a 34% increase in cat abandonment cases in 2024 alone. Cats are now averaging 39 days in their care before finding new homes.
The RSPCA's appeal forms part of its broader 'Cruelty Hurts, Love Rescues' campaign, launched to address the mounting strain on rehoming centres. The charity, which is funded primarily by voluntary donations from the public, directs approximately 78-81p from every £1 donated to rescuing and caring for vulnerable animals.
