Finnair Avios redemptions come with free connections in Northern Europe
A recent announcement from Finnair highlights a valuable but often overlooked feature of its Avios redemption programme: complimentary connections within Northern Europe and Finland. Passengers booking award travel on Finnair can add an extra flight segment at no additional Avios cost when connecting to or from 18 designated cities in the region.
The benefit applies whether travellers book directly through Finnair Plus or via British Airways Executive Club by redeeming Avios. Finnair adopted Avios as its loyalty currency in March 2024, joining British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar Airways and Vueling in the shared currency programme. Members can transfer Avios between these six airline programmes at a 1:1 ratio.
According to Finnair's official policy, connecting flights within Zone 1—which encompasses Finland and Northern Europe—incur no separate Avios charge when booked as part of a longer journey. For example, a Stockholm to Helsinki to Singapore routing requires Avios only for the Helsinki to Singapore segment, with the Stockholm to Helsinki flight effectively free.
Eligible cities and strategic value
The complimentary connection applies to flights between Helsinki and 18 cities: Bodø, Copenhagen, Gdansk, Gothenburg, Ivalo, Kirkenes, Kittilä, Kuusamo, Oslo, Riga, Rovaniemi (winter only), Stockholm, Tallinn, Trondheim, Umeå, Vilnius, Visby and Warsaw.
This policy creates exceptional value for one-stop journeys. A Manchester to Rovaniemi routing via Helsinki costs just 12,000 Avios in economy—the same price as a direct Manchester to Helsinki flight—despite adding nearly five hours to total travel time with the connection. The only difference is approximately £6 in additional taxes.
Helsinki Airport's efficiency as a connecting hub reinforces this value proposition. The facility maintains a minimum connection time of just 35 minutes for Schengen-to-Schengen transfers, among the shortest in Europe. With over 100 direct routes including approximately 25 intercontinental destinations, Helsinki has established itself as a strategic transit point between Europe and Asia, with international transfer passengers accounting for 38.6% of total traffic.
Finnair expanded its 2026 network to 93 European destinations, adding 12 new routes for summer 2026. The carrier also launched long-haul services to Toronto in May 2026 and will begin Melbourne flights via Bangkok in October 2026, broadening redemption opportunities.
Avoiding UK Air Passenger Duty
The free connection policy offers an additional strategic advantage for UK-based travellers seeking to avoid Air Passenger Duty on long-haul flights. From 1 April 2027, business class passengers on long-haul routes will pay £261.25 in APD under Band C rates. The government will begin calculating APD to the nearest penny rather than the nearest pound from that date.
Travellers flying to destinations such as Osaka can book a separate ticket from a UK regional airport to a Scandinavian city like Stockholm using a budget carrier, then commence their Finnair Avios redemption from Stockholm to Osaka via Helsinki. Because the Stockholm to Helsinki segment incurs no Avios charge, the total cost remains identical to booking from Helsinki directly, whilst eliminating the APD liability.
Helsinki itself serves limited UK departure points—currently only Heathrow, Manchester and Edinburgh on Finnair—making Scandinavian connection points particularly useful for travellers in other UK regions.
Booking mechanics and business class advantage
Redemptions can be processed through either finnair.com or ba.com. However, business class travellers should note a pricing anomaly favouring British Airways Executive Club bookings. Because domestic Finnish flights operate economy-only equipment, routing through ba.com can trigger favourable pricing on mixed-cabin itineraries.
A Heathrow to Rovaniemi business class booking costs 16,250 Avios plus £75.45 when booked via ba.com, with business class seating from Heathrow to Helsinki before the economy domestic connection. The same routing requires 18,000 Avios through Finnair Plus, matching the cost of a standalone Heathrow to Helsinki business class flight on either platform.
Finnair does not apply peak pricing to award redemptions, unlike British Airways, meaning costs remain consistent throughout the year regardless of seasonal demand. The airline also guarantees award seat availability on its own aircraft, ensuring redemption opportunities remain accessible.
Passengers should note that whilst the free Zone 1 connection remains in effect, Finnair has adjusted partner award pricing in 2026. The carrier increased American Airlines redemption rates by up to 50% in January 2026 and raised Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines awards by up to 110% in March 2026, both without advance notice.
Stopovers are not permitted when using the free connection benefit—passengers must continue through on their journey. However, Finnair does allow one complimentary stopover on return long-haul award bookings, providing flexibility for extended trips.
