Monzo launches Junior Stocks and Shares ISA with family gifting feature
Monzo has introduced a Junior Stocks and Shares ISA, marking the digital bank's entry into long-term investment products for children. The account allows parents and guardians to invest up to £9,000 annually on behalf of children aged 0 to 16, with all growth and income shielded from tax.
The UK's largest digital bank and seventh-largest overall by customer numbers, Monzo currently serves more than 16 million customers across the UK, including over one million business customers. The launch builds on the bank's existing youth market presence, with more than one million customers under 18 already using Monzo.
A distinctive feature of the new product enables parents to generate shareable links through which family members and friends can contribute money directly to the child's investment account. This gifting mechanism aims to simplify contributions from grandparents and other relatives who want to support a child's financial future.
The account carries no monthly fees, setup charges or transaction costs. Parents maintain full control over investment decisions until the child reaches 18, at which point the account automatically converts into an adult Stocks and Shares ISA.
Tax-free allowance and regulatory framework
The £9,000 annual allowance for Junior ISAs in the 2026/27 tax year applies across all Junior ISAs held by a child. This limit has remained unchanged since the 2020/21 tax year and is set to continue at the same level until April 2031.
Children can hold both a Junior Cash ISA and a Junior Stocks and Shares ISA simultaneously, but total contributions across both accounts cannot exceed the £9,000 threshold per tax year. Both the parent or guardian and the child must be UK residents to qualify for Monzo's product.
Money deposited into a Junior ISA is locked until the child turns 18. Only the child can access the funds once they reach that age, meaning parents cannot withdraw money early even in emergencies. The funds legally belong to the child from the moment they are deposited.
Growing market for children's investment accounts
The Junior ISA market has experienced significant expansion in recent years. HMRC data shows that £1.8 billion was subscribed into Junior ISAs during 2023/24 across 1.37 million accounts, representing a 20 percent increase on the prior year and the highest annual subscription level on record.
Monzo's entry into this market comes as families increasingly seek tax-efficient ways to save for their children's futures. The stocks and shares wrapper offers potential for higher returns than cash alternatives over the long investment periods typical of children's accounts, though investments can fall as well as rise in value.
The product launch follows a broader trend of digital banks expanding beyond current accounts into wealth management services. For Monzo, the Junior ISA represents an opportunity to deepen relationships with existing customers who have children while attracting new families to the platform.
