An EV suited to the school run
The E-408 joined the Auto Express fleet in September 2026, replacing Pringle's mild-hybrid Volkswagen Tiguan. He had enjoyed the Volkswagen, but driving the Peugeot reminded him why he prefers an EV's immediate torque and quiet operation. His initial rating is 3.5 stars, with the puncture the only problem logged.
Since the summer holidays ended, his driving has largely involved short trips for school, shopping, sports and drama rehearsals rather than long journeys. He reports that the Peugeot suits this routine well. Off-street parking and a home wallbox also make electric ownership convenient and economical for him.
For this GT Premium version, Peugeot quotes a WLTP combined range of up to 281 miles in its May 2026 UK pricing and specification announcement. The Allure and GT versions have slightly higher ratings of up to 283 miles. These are official figures, not results from Pringle's long-term test.
DC charging is supported at up to 120kW. Peugeot states that charging from 20% to 80% takes about 30 minutes using a 100kW public charger, while a full recharge from a 7kW wallbox takes less than 6.5 hours.
Distinctive styling with room for the family
Appearance was central to Pringle's choice, especially the Flare Green paint included as standard on the top GT Premium trim. He reports receiving more favorable comments about this car than any other he has driven in the past five years.
He also values the E-408's relative rarity and prefers choosing something outside the top-selling brands. Peugeot's wider business is substantial: the company says it operates in more than 140 countries and sold almost 1.1 million vehicles worldwide in 2024. Its electric range comprises nine passenger cars and three light commercial vehicles.
The sloping bodywork has not prevented Pringle, his wife and their 12-year-old daughter from finding enough cabin space. He has yet to give the cargo area a full test, but expects its 471-liter capacity to meet their needs. Peugeot quotes that volume with the rear seats upright, increasing to as much as 1,545 liters when they are folded. There is no separate compartment for the charging cable.
Leather, Alcantara and green seat stitching contribute to an interior Pringle finds upscale. He also appreciates the scope for personalizing the settings, although he expects to leave them alone now that he has configured the car to his taste.
Comfort, controls and visibility
The tested car pairs a 58kWh battery with one electric motor rated at 207 bhp and 343 Nm of torque. Pringle finds its performance more than sufficient. The ride feels slightly firm around town but becomes smoother at higher speeds, and he welcomes the ability to switch off some unwanted driver-assistance functions with one button press.
Peugeot also equips the E-408 with three regenerative-braking settings controlled by steering-wheel paddles and battery pre-conditioning. Vehicle-to-Load functionality allows the high-voltage battery to supply external devices, although the required adapter is sold separately.
Finding a suitable driving position took several days of seat and steering-wheel adjustments. Pringle is over six feet tall and had not liked Peugeot's i-Cockpit arrangement in earlier cars, but he has now found a comfortable setup in the E-408.
That position still leaves the touchscreen far enough away that he must lean forward to reach it. Its shallow proportions also make the Apple CarPlay icons small, so selecting between Google Maps and music apps while driving is not always straightforward.
Rear visibility in rain is another complaint. Water gathers on the sharply sloped rear window without clearing as readily as it would from a more upright window, and there is no rear wiper. Pringle says he would accept the extra weight and aerodynamic penalty of a wiper for a clearer view in poor weather.
UK pricing and ownership coverage
The GT Premium tested costs £39,095 before the UK government's £1,500 Electric Car Grant, or £37,595 after it. The grant reduces the entry-level electric Allure's on-the-road price from £34,195 to £32,695.
The E-408 belongs to the revised 408 range announced in January 2026, which also includes hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. Prices across the range begin at £31,995 for the hybrid.
For the European market, E-408 production takes place exclusively at Peugeot's Mulhouse plant. Its electric motor is manufactured in Trémery, France.
Peugeot Care, also called Allure Care, provides eight-year/100,000-mile coverage for the battery, electric motor, powertrain and charging system, subject to servicing at an authorized Peugeot dealer.
