Tesla Model Y leads owners' cargo-space ratings in Driver Power 2026

The Tesla Model Y ranks first for cargo space in Carwow's latest Driver Power list, followed by the Vauxhall Frontera and Peugeot 5008. The 2026 survey drew responses from more than 100,000 UK drivers and marks 25 years since its first publication, according to Auto Express.

The three highest-rated models

The Model Y combines an 854-liter cargo area with storage below the floor and deep side compartments for smaller belongings. For comparison, Carwow puts the Skoda Enyaq and Audi Q4 e-tron in the 500- to 600-liter range. The Tesla has some shortcomings, however: the base model lacks a standard parcel shelf, and Carwow describes the cargo floor as feeling somewhat cheap.

Owners' comments included "love the roomy boot" and praise for its "ample space and practicality". The Model Y also won the premium SUV class in the broader Driver Power results. Auto Express reported on June 9 that it finished 12th overall, helped by its top overall infotainment ranking, even though it came last among the 50 cars surveyed for exterior and interior styling, material quality, and fit and finish.

Second-place Vauxhall Frontera provides up to 460 liters, counting a large compartment beneath the floor. Its squared-off cargo area has no loading lip, while folding the rear seats creates a flat floor and expands capacity to 1,600 liters. Two tie-down points help secure loads. In its first year in Driver Power, the Frontera also won the small SUV class, according to Auto Express.

The Peugeot 5008 takes third with 348 liters available when all seven seats are occupied, roughly matching the Skoda Kodiaq, according to Carwow. Lowering the third row increases that figure to 916 liters. Those seats fold flat easily, leaving a clear cargo area accessible through a large, square opening.

Grandland, Kuga and Puma take fourth through sixth

A square cargo area and substantial underfloor storage feature in the fourth-place Vauxhall Grandland. Its 550-liter capacity is slightly greater than that of the Peugeot 3008 and Nissan Qashqai, Carwow says. The Grandland also secured its second consecutive mid-size SUV class win in Driver Power, Auto Express reported on June 9.

Fifth-place Ford Kuga has 526 liters of cargo capacity, or 475 liters in the plug-in hybrid. Folding the rear seats opens up as much as 1,603 liters, although the resulting floor is not entirely level. Bulky loads fit in the main cargo area; beneath it, there is space for a couple of backpacks unless a spare wheel is fitted.

The Ford Puma ranks sixth. Its 456-liter cargo area is wide and square, with a small lip at the opening. An 80-liter underfloor compartment, called the Megabox, provides additional storage flexibility.

The remaining four

The gasoline-powered Hyundai Tucson offers 620 liters with the rear seats upright and 1,799 liters when they are folded. It places seventh in owners' cargo-space ratings.

Volkswagen's T-Roc follows in eighth with up to 475 liters, ahead of the ninth-place Peugeot 308 at 412 liters. The Volkswagen Tiguan rounds out the top 10 with a 652-liter cargo area.

A separate result for overall practicality

These cargo-space ratings differ from Driver Power's broader ranking covering practicality and cargo space. In that separate list, published by Carwow on July 14, 2026, the Peugeot 5008 led with 89.17%. The Vauxhall Grandland scored 88.55%, followed by the Hyundai Tucson at 88.46%.

That ranking's other top-10 models were the Ford Kuga, Vauxhall Frontera, MG HS, Tesla Model Y, Peugeot 3008, Peugeot 308 and Volkswagen Tiguan.
