Virgin Red offers 6,000-point referral bonuses as Qatar launches November Avios deals

Virgin Red's referral promotion awards 6,000 points to both participants, while Qatar Airways' November award-flight discounts have a November 14 booking deadline. Both offers featured in Head for Points' November 7 travel discussion, alongside British Airways status rules and a traveler's plans to reach Egypt's 2027 eclipse path.

Virgin Red referral requirements

Virgin Red's promotion runs until November 30, 2026, but signing up through a referral is not enough to release the points. The referred friend must complete a first qualifying "earn" transaction before either person receives the 6,000-point bonus.

The friend must be a UK resident age 18 or older and has up to 18 months to complete that transaction. Neither buying points nor transferring American Express Membership Rewards points qualifies.

Members are limited to 10 referral bonuses in any rolling 12-month period, allowing them to earn up to 60,000 Virgin Points through referrals.

Qatar's discounts cover itineraries with an eligible endpoint

Qatar Airways' November 2026 Privilege Deals offer a 25% Avios discount on award flights booked by November 14, 2026, for travel by December 31, 2026. This is the fourth monthly batch of the offers.

Eligibility depends on where the trip begins or ends, with different lists for each cabin. Business-class endpoints are Amman, Beirut, Bucharest, Colombo, Dar es Salaam, Jakarta, Kathmandu, Kuala Lumpur, Manila and Tbilisi. Economy-class endpoints are Addis Ababa, Beirut, Cairo, Entebbe, Geneva, Oslo and Seychelles.

Having an eligible city at either end makes the whole itinerary eligible for the discount. A business-class journey starting in Bucharest, for example, can receive the reduction to any destination.

British Airways' unpublished soft landings

Head for Points also addressed whether British Airways Club members lose all their status when they fail to requalify. The program operates "soft landings," under which members move down only one tier per year instead of falling directly to Blue.

In the example given, a Gold member who misses the 20,000-tier-point renewal threshold retains Gold for the following year, then receives a year of Silver and a year of Bronze, even without earning additional tier points. Soft landings are not a published program benefit.

A late Cairo arrival complicates an eclipse trip

The forum discussion turned to Egypt after davefl praised the Cairo airport hotel where they were staying. They reported effective soundproofing, generous wine pours in the lounge and acceptable food, but questioned an Egyptair gate time set 80 minutes before the next day's departure. Pangolin responded with a joke comparing the timing to Turkish Airlines.

Pangolin has a July 29 booking at the same property, identified in their post as LM Cairo Airport. They secured a room for 19,000 points when cash prices were exceptionally high. An Aegean schedule change then disrupted the planned stay: the airline canceled their afternoon flight and moved them to a later service arriving at 2:50 a.m. the next day, rather than around 8 p.m.

They still intend to sleep at the hotel for a few hours before traveling from Cairo airport to Port Ghalib. Pangolin said the bus service only reaches Hurghada, leaving them considering a bus from Cairo station followed by a separately arranged driver. Their concern is that drivers could charge hundreds of dollars to enter the eclipse's zone of totality; the post described a worry, not a confirmed fare.

The eclipse will take place on August 2, 2027. According to timeanddate.com, it will have the second-longest totality of the 21st century. The point of greatest eclipse lies in southern Egypt, about 50 km east of Luxor, with totality lasting about 6 minutes 22 seconds and beginning around 1:02 p.m. local time. Satellite records suggest cloud-free skies along the Egyptian portion of the path.

Elsewhere in the exchange, davefl noted that Marsa Alam International Airport, whose IATA code is RMF, sits 60 km north of Marsa Alam. They jokingly compared that distance from the namesake destination to a Ryanair airport.
