Council officers recommended up to 150 homes at former colliery near Newhall

Plans for up to 150 homes on part of the former Cadley Hill Colliery had received a recommendation for approval from South Derbyshire District Council officers as of January 7, 2025. Harworth Group's proposal covers land between Newhall, Stanton and Swadlincote.

Housing plans and a proposed GP branch

Harworth Group submitted the application in January 2023 for the northern part of the former colliery. According to BBC News, the proposal marked a change from the council's earlier masterplan for 600 homes at the site. The officers' recommendation was not a final approval.

Housing also features in the Derby Telegraph's Newhall coverage, including reports on a possible development of dozens of homes and an affordable housing project welcomed during uncertain times. The newspaper separately reported that plans for a Co-op food store in South Derbyshire had been rejected.

Another planned development concerns Newhall Surgery in Swadlincote. On October 5, 2024, BBC News reported that NHS bosses had confirmed the practice had won the right to build a GP branch at Drakelow Park in Drakelow, South Derbyshire, where more than 2,300 homes were expected.

The timetable then envisaged construction starting in 2026 and the branch opening in mid-2028 to serve 11,000 residents. Developer contributions through Section 106 would provide part of the funding.

Court reports and community stories

The Derby Telegraph's Newhall page brings together court, crime and community coverage. Its court reports include drink, theft, drug and criminal damage cases, an Alfa Romeo owner caught driving under the influence twice in 10 days, and an arrest warrant for a Derbyshire man charged with animal abuse. Another report covers an arson attack at a Derbyshire park that was described as "disgusting."

Community stories include a decision allowing a large Captain Tom and NHS mural at a boxing club to remain after a dispute, along with efforts to save old public phone booths because they were still needed.

Two reports concern teapots found gathering dust in Derbyshire, one in a garage and another in an attic. Pandemic coverage includes plans to open a COVID-19 recovery center in a Derbyshire village and a report that a waste collection worker was infected while three colleagues were self-isolating.

Newhall's location and mining history

Newhall lies in England's South Derbyshire district, between Swadlincote and Burton upon Trent. Swadlincote is its nearest town center. Wikipedia's village infobox gives its population as 8,060 at the 2021 census.

The village's mining past is reflected in the number of places that once sold alcohol: Newhall had more than 60 pubs and stores licensed for off-premises sales at one time. One researcher has documented 37 of them.

Newhall also holds a place in Britain's population history. In 1971, it was calculated to be Great Britain's population center. That point had been at Rodsley in 1901 and had shifted south to Appleby Magna by 2000.
