Local prices and national comparisons
The three supermarkets are tied for the lowest price for both fuels. Tesco Prestatyn is next, charging 174.9p a liter for unleaded and 198.9p for diesel. Asda Express Rhyl and BP Prestatyn each list unleaded at 175.9p and diesel at 199.9p.
These PetrolPrices figures are subject to frequent changes. Drivers are advised to check Google for updated prices in their area before filling up.
Nationally, supermarkets also offered lower average prices than other forecourts in AA analysis published October 8, 2026. The gap was 2.54p a liter for petrol and 2.93p for diesel.
The AA put the UK averages at 174.71p for petrol and 199.88p for diesel. Its regional petrol figures ranged from 167.32p in Northern Ireland to 175.91p in the South East.
Fuel costs push inflation higher
Higher petrol and diesel costs helped lift the UK's Consumer Prices Index inflation rate to 3.5% in September from 3.1% in August, according to the Office for National Statistics. That was the highest inflation rate in almost a year.
Motor fuel prices were 30% higher than a year earlier in September, compared with an annual increase of 23% in August. Average petrol prices climbed 8.2p between August and September to 169.5p a liter, a level not recorded in around four years.
Diesel subsequently crossed another threshold. On October 2, 2026, the RAC reported a UK average of 200.01p a liter, the first time it had exceeded £2. Petrol averaged 174.71p that day.
By early October, petrol cost about 42p a liter more and diesel about 57p more than before the US-Iran war began on February 28, 2026. The RAC estimated that filling a typical 55-liter tank cost £96.09 with petrol or £110.01 with diesel.
Oil supply disruptions and the G7 response
Global oil market pressures and conflict in the Middle East are driving the increases. The RAC and BBC News attribute the surge to the Iran war, which has severely disrupted production and transportation of wholesale oil and refined products from the region since February 2026.
They also identify Ukrainian attacks on Russian refiners and Chinese restrictions on refined fuel exports as further constraints on global diesel supplies.
To ease supply pressures, G7 nations agreed on October 2, 2026, to release up to 100 million barrels of oil and diesel over four months. Coordinated through the International Energy Agency, the plan includes a "frontloaded substantial diesel release within the first 20 days".
Car-shopping trends and calls for a duty cut
Auto Express linked high fuel prices to changing interest among car shoppers. From March through the end of September 2026, inquiries for internal-combustion-engine cars on the Carwow marketplace fell 33%, while inquiries for electric vehicles increased 28%.
Ahead of the October 28, 2026, Budget, the AA called on the Chancellor to retain the existing 5p fuel duty cut and reduce duty by another 5p. The organization said that, if fully passed on, the additional cut would lower pump prices by about 6p a liter and save around £3.30 on a typical family fill-up. The current fuel duty freeze is scheduled to end December 31, 2026.
