Tendril Studio Builds Visual World for Alo Yoga's First Handbag Collection

Tendril Studio has developed a series of CG films for Alo Yoga's handbag collection, creating a visual language built around material transformation and restrained movement. The Toronto-based animation studio, founded in 2010 and now a subsidiary of FutureDeluxe, produced the work to support the athleisure brand's ongoing expansion into luxury accessories.

The Collection Launch

Alo Yoga, founded in 2007 in Los Angeles by Danny Harris and Marco DeGeorge, initially launched its handbag collection in September 2025 with a campaign photographed by Steven Meisel featuring models Candice Swanepoel, Daiane Sodre, and Amelia Gray. The Tendril films represent a separate phase of the collection's promotion, developing a distinct visual approach centered on the physical qualities of the products themselves.

The collection comprises four silhouettes—the Voyage Duffle, Tranquility Tote, Odyssey Bowler, and Balance Bucket—crafted from responsibly sourced calfskin and suede with prices ranging from $1,200 to $3,600. Each bag includes an intentional crystal charm, either Smoky Quartz for grounding or Citrine for creativity, connecting the luxury design to Alo's wellness heritage. The brand's name itself stands for Air, Land, Ocean, reflecting its roots in movement and natural elements.

Visual Approach and Production

Tendril's visual approach focused on revealing the handbags gradually through their constituent materials rather than presenting them as static product renders. Leather moves across the frame, light catches perforated surfaces, wire tightens into structure, and crystal emerges from surrounding materials before resolving into the finished products. The studio developed the films using Cinema 4D and Houdini, which allowed precise control over the physical relationships between materials, lighting effects and movement sequences.

The production also incorporated AI exploration during early development stages, enabling the team to rapidly test visual directions before committing to final production. This workflow allowed Tendril to identify the most effective approaches for each of the four films while maintaining a unified aesthetic across the series.

Creative workshops were held ahead of each work-in-progress stage, with the team collaborating to align on direction and develop ideas collectively. This process ensured consistency across the films while allowing each handbag to receive its own distinct material treatment and visual gesture. The films share a common language of tactile transformation, controlled movement and careful lighting that connects them to Alo's established visual identity while establishing a specific character for the accessories line.

Tendril's Experience and Client Roster

Tendril brought significant experience to the project, having recently completed a Clio Award-winning campaign for FX Networks' Alien: Earth and the Emmy-awarded NBA on NBC brand campaign. The studio's client roster includes Microsoft, IBM, Hublot and Nike, positioning it as a natural partner for Alo's luxury category expansion.

Alo Yoga's Strategic Expansion

The handbag launch represents part of Alo Yoga's broader strategic growth beyond activewear. The brand previously introduced sneakers in May 2023, the Alo Atelier formalwear collection in October 2023, and the ALO Wellness System beauty line in December 2020. This category expansion mirrors a wider industry trend, with athleisure competitors including Lululemon, Vuori and Athleta similarly pushing beyond traditional performance apparel into lifestyle accessories and premium goods.

The privately held company has demonstrated substantial growth, surpassing $1 billion in annual revenue by 2022 while maintaining over 40% annual growth rates. The brand's estimated valuation reached approximately $10 billion by 2023, supporting significant investments in product development and creative partnerships.

Market Reception and Challenges

The handbag collection's reception has varied across markets. In China, the launch sparked debate over pricing and positioning, with industry observers questioning whether Alo's crystal mysticism and Los Angeles lifestyle branding could command prices approaching luxury heritage brands. The mixed reactions highlight both the ambition and challenges inherent in transitioning from athletic apparel to luxury accessories.

The Tendril films launched across Alo's digital channels, providing an alternative visual vocabulary to traditional fashion photography. By constructing each film around material behavior—brass flashing against light, perforations creating shadow patterns, leather flowing through three-dimensional space—the work positions the handbags within Alo's established aesthetic of movement and mindful design while giving the accessories category its own visual identity.

The production demonstrates how CGI can extend brand storytelling beyond conventional product presentation, using material physics and digital craft to create moments of gradual revelation. As each film progresses, abstract elements coalesce into recognizable silhouettes, transforming product visualization into a more experiential introduction to the collection.
